The son of the great mughal emperor Akbar, Salim, fell in love with an ordinary, but beautiful courtesan Anarkali. Anarkali, whose name means “pomegranate blossom” was known for her dancing skills, as much as for her beauty. Salim was mesmerized by her beauty and fell in love as soon as he saw her. But the emperor could not digest the fact that his son was in love with an ordinary courtesan.
Emperor Akbar started pressurizing Anarkali and devised various tactics to make her fall in grace in the eyes of the young, love-smitten prince. When Salim found out he declared war against his father. But the mighty emperor’s gigantic army proved too much for the young prince to handle.
He was defeated and sentenced to death.
This was when Anarkali intervened and renounced her love save her beloved from the jaws of death. She was entombed alive in a brick wall. Right in front of her lover’s eyes . Thus ended the tragic love story of Salim and Anarkali. However Salim lived on to become Emperor, who loved Anarkali throughout his life and the very moment when he was dying, he only remembered Anarkali.
The love between Salim and Anarkali has inspired our chesfs to cook our dishes with the same passion and love none more so than owner and chef Rafique.
Rafique came to Anarkali in 1972 and the love for his food has kept him here to the present day. His culinary skills have been widely enjoyed and acknowledge not only by the customers but also by the critics alike.
Rafique has raised the bar for many restaurants and has trained many chefs, waiters and managers, most of whom have now gone to succeed in their own ventures, all of which have learnt the secret here at Anarkali.
